FGG statement about Gay Games XII València 2026
We are aware of recent public statements questioning the integrity and inclusivity of the Gay Games XII València 2026. We respect that individuals and organisations may hold different opinions, but it is important to clarify certain points so our community can base its views on facts, not misinformation.
Our Shared Mission
The Gay Games were founded over 40 years ago to celebrate diversity and inclusion through sport and culture. They have always been – and remain – a community-driven, volunteer-led, non-profit initiative, independent from any government or political party. This will never change.
Community Involvement
From the beginning, the local LGBTQ+ community in València has played an essential role in the bid and organisation of the event. Many LGBTQ+ individuals and allies continue to serve in leadership, staff, and volunteer positions today. The suggestion that “no associations from the community” are involved is simply not true. We also rely on the support of AVEGAL – València’s association of LGBTQ+ businesses and professionals – in organising the Games. We remain open to collaboration with all organisations that share the Gay Games’ values of inclusion, respect, and participation for everyone.
Our Independence
Public funding and publicly owned facilities help make the Gay Games accessible and affordable – without them the Gay Games would not exist. Other Valencian LGBTQ+ sports and cultural groups also make use of public funding and publicly owned facilities too. However, receiving public funds does not mean we are aligned with or controlled by any government. The Federation of Gay Games and the Gay Games XII València 2026 Executive Committee operate with full autonomy, guided by our global principles of equality, respect, and diversity.
Commitment to Trans and Non-Binary Inclusion
We want to be absolutely clear: the Gay Games stand firmly for trans inclusion and gender self-determination in sport and culture. This has always been the case and will continue to be so. That commitment is not negotiable and will be reflected in every aspect of the València 2026 event. These commitments were agreed with the local government and will be respected at the event.
Why We Chose to Continue
We recognise that recent political changes in the region have led to funding cuts affecting some LGBTQ+ organisations and initiatives. This reality is deeply concerning and one we do not ignore. However, we believe that visibility and presence are more powerful than absence and silence. We chose to continue with the Gay Games because standing up for queer rights means confronting – not retreating from – those who seek to diminish them. Through dialogue with the local community, we found many share our conviction: visibility, activity, and unity are stronger than silence or disappearance.
Misrepresentation and Division
We are deeply hurt and concerned by the attempts of Lambda and Dracs to discredit our all-volunteer, non-profit organisation through misleading information and emotionally charged rhetoric. It is deeply unfair and disheartening for one LGBTQ+ organisation to attack another while misrepresenting their intentions and work. These attacks seek to hold us accountable for government policies entirely outside our control, and to portray us as transphobic simply because we approach activism differently. While we welcome constructive criticism and open dialogue, we do not believe that undermining or attacking another LGBTQ+ organisation is ever an appropriate or justifiable way to advocate for our shared community.
An Invitation to Dialogue
We understand that some organisations and individuals may feel conflicted about supporting an event that uses funding and facilities provided by the current local government. Whilst most local LGBTQ+ community groups also rely on public funding and facilities to exist, we recognise that it is completely valid to choose not to participate in. We only ask that our community also recognises the impact the Gay Games have had over the past 40 years in advancing LGBTQ+ visibility, inclusion, and equality worldwide. Different forms of activism can and should coexist, and our strength as a community lies in our diversity of voices, not in division. We welcome dialogue, collaboration, and participation from all who share this commitment, and we invite everyone to help ensure the Gay Games remain a celebration of visibility, pride, and solidarity.

Somos conscientes de las recientes declaraciones públicas que cuestionan la integridad y la inclusividad de los Gay Games XII València 2026. Respetamos que las personas y las organizaciones tengan opiniones diferentes, pero consideramos importante aclarar ciertos puntos para que nuestra comunidad pueda formarse una opinión basada en hechos, y no en desinformación.
Nuestra misión compartida
Los Gay Games se fundaron hace más de 40 años para celebrar la diversidad y la inclusión a través del deporte y la cultura. Siempre han sido —y siguen siendo— una iniciativa comunitaria, dirigida por personas voluntarias y sin ánimo de lucro, independiente de cualquier gobierno o partido político. Esto nunca cambiará.
Participación del colectivo
Desde el principio, la comunidad local LGTBIAQ+ de València ha desempeñado un papel esencial en la candidatura y en la organización del evento. Muchas personas LGTBAIQ+ y aliadas continúan hoy formando parte del liderazgo, de la oficina técnica y del voluntariado. La afirmación de que «no hay asociaciones de la comunidad implicadas» es sencillamente falsa. Además, contamos con el apoyo de AVEGAL —la asociación valenciana de empresas y profesionales LGTBIQ+— en la organización de los juegos. Seguimos abiertos a colaborar con todas las organizaciones que compartan los valores de inclusión, respeto y participación para todas las personas que representan los Gay Games.
Nuestra independencia
La financiación pública, así como el uso de instalaciones públicas, ayudan a que los Gay Games sean accesibles y asequibles —como sucede también con otros grupos deportivos y culturales LGTBIQ+ valencianos—. Sin embargo, recibir fondos públicos no significa que estemos en la línea ni bajo el control de ningún gobierno. La Federation of Gay Games y el comité ejecutivo de los Gay Games XII València 2026 operan con total autonomía, guiados por nuestros principios globales de igualdad, respeto y diversidad.
Compromiso con la inclusión trans y no binaria
Queremos dejarlo absolutamente claro: los Gay Games defienden firmemente la inclusión de las personas trans y la autodeterminación de género en el deporte y la cultura, y también en el resto de los ámbitos de la sociedad. Así ha sido siempre y así continuará siendo. Este compromiso no es negociable y se reflejará en todos los aspectos del evento València 2026. Estos compromisos se acordaron con el gobierno local y se respetarán durante el evento.
Por qué decidimos continuar
Reconocemos que los recientes cambios políticos en la región han supuesto la pérdida o limitación de algunos derechos que afectan a organizaciones e iniciativas LGTBIAQ+. Esta situación nos preocupa profundamente y no la ignoramos. Sin embargo, creemos que la visibilidad y la presencia son más poderosas que la ausencia y el silencio. Decidimos continuar con los Gay Games porque defender los derechos del colectivo significa enfrentarse —no retirarse— ante quienes intentan reducirlos. En diálogo con la comunidad local, encontramos que muchas personas comparten nuestra convicción: la visibilidad, la acción y la unidad son más fuertes que el silencio o la desaparición.
Desinformación y división
Sentimos malestar y preocupaciónpor los intentos de Lambda y Dracs de desacreditar nuestra organización sin ánimo de lucro, formadaprincipalmente por personas voluntarias, mediante el uso de información engañosa y una retórica cargada emocionalmente. Es profundamente injusto y desalentador que una organización LGTBIAQ+ ataque a otra tergiversando sus intenciones y su trabajo. Estos ataques intentan responsabilizarnos de políticas gubernamentales que están completamente fuera de nuestro control, y acusarnos de transfobia simplemente porque abordamos el activismo de una manera diferente. Si bien acogemos con gusto las críticas constructivas y el diálogo abierto, no creemos que socavar o atacar a otra organización LGTBIAQ+ sea una forma adecuada ni justificable de defender a nuestro colectivo.
Una invitación al diálogo
Entendemos que algunas organizaciones y personas puedan sentirse en conflicto a la hora de apoyar un evento que utiliza financiación e instalaciones proporcionadas por el actual gobierno local. Aunque la mayoría de los grupos LGTBIAQ+ locales también dependen de fondos e instalaciones públicas para su funcionamiento, reconocemos que es totalmente válido decidir no participar. Solo pedimos que nuestra comunidad también reconozca el impacto que los Gay Games han tenido durante los últimos 40 años en el avance de la visibilidad, la inclusión y la igualdad LGTBIAQ+ en todo el mundo. Diferentes formas de activismo pueden y deben coexistir, y nuestra fuerza como comunidad reside en la diversidad de nuestras voces, no en la división. Damos la bienvenida al diálogo, la colaboración y la participación de todas las personas que compartan este compromiso, y las invitamos a todas a contribuir para que los Gay Games sigan siendo una celebración de la visibilidad,la inclusión, el orgullo y la solidaridad.
